Super8 & Tab - In Search Of Sunrise 20
Black Hole
September 9th, 2024
Six discs, six DJs and one landmark release, September 2024 sees the epic-in-every-respect arrival of the 20th ‘In Search Of Sunrise’. Every week in the run up, Black Hole are unveiling one of the DJs equal to this task. We’ll then be talking to them about the facets of their mix and what the series has meant to them over the longer course.
Thus far they’ve already raised the curtain on Solarstone and Airscape and now on week #3 Black Hole are thrilled to announce Super8 & Tab as their ‘next to the decks’! Naturally, Miika and Janne have plenty of ISOS pedigree and the melodics to match, so let’s dive into their mix!
What was the first ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ album you guys heard or bought?
“The first ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ album that really made an impact on us was ‘Vol. 5: Los Angeles’. It holds a special place in our hearts because Tiësto included ‘Helsinki Scorchin’ on that compilation. That moment was a significant boost for our international career, and it truly put us on the map.”
Looking back across the previous 19 tracklists, what’s your favourite piece of music that’s been compiled onto an ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ album?
“One of our favourite tracks has to be DT8’s ‘Destination’, which we had the honour of reworking for the 20th edition of ISOS. The original is such a classic, and it perfectly captures the spirit of the series. It’s been a privilege to breathe new life into it through a Super8 & Tab remix.”
The music of ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ is perhaps renowned for having both a ‘sound’ and a ‘feel’. How would you summarize that in three words?
“Euphoric, Emotional, Uplifting.”
Is there a track on your mix that encapsulates that best?
“Were back to DT8 Project’s ‘Destination’ with that one! Our rework encapsulates those feelings perfectly. The track is a journey through euphoria, deep emotion, and an uplifting energy that resonates deeply with the ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ ethos.”
How did you approach the flow of your disc’s mix, and how long did it take you to complete, start to finish?
“We approached this mix as a journey, in the same fashion we structure our extended DJ sets. We wanted it to be something you could easily put on after a night out or when you’re with friends before heading to a show. It mirrors the flow of one of our 4-hour sets but cut into a little over 60 minutes. It took us some time to find a place for each track, where it complemented the next one and captured the essence of the ISOS experience.”
When you were looking for new, exclusive material, who did you reach out to?
“Our friends and various labels, but we also wanted to bring in something fresh from up-and-coming artists. It was important for us to have a balance between established names and new talents to keep the mix exciting.”
Talk to us about the Super8 & Tab productions you chose to include 😊
“We obviously wanted to include ‘Helsinki Scorchin’ as a nod to how far this track has taken us in our careers. We also added our recent collaboration with Lurum & Luca, ‘Hold The Fire’, and our latest release, ‘Flare’, which has a bit of an old-school vibe.”
Yourself aside perhaps, was there one ISOS-oriented music maker that you were particularly keen to have on your disc?
“We wanted to have the best selection of tracks as possible. That meant including some exclusives, a blast from the past, and maybe a few surprises you wouldn’t expect from us. We were thrilled to include tracks from Finnish friends like Anton ‘SØNIN’ Sonin, JS16, and the rapidly rising Mofasa from Scorchin’ Records.”
Releases in the series have often been associated with places on the planet. Which country or city particularly comes to mind when you guys think ‘In Search Of Sunrise’?
“Ibiza is the first place that comes to mind. The island’s combination of beauty, mystique, and energy perfectly embodies the spirit of the series. It’s a place where the music truly meets the moment, especially as the sun rises over the Mediterranean.”
“Music truly meets the moment” – love that! Now, is there one artist, producer, or singer that you think encapsulates ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ – the series more than any other?
“Tiësto, especially during his early years, is the artist that truly captures the spirit of ‘In Search Of Sunrise.’ His selection of tracks, ranging from uplifting anthems to darker, more intense club sounds, created a dynamic journey that has become synonymous with the ISOS experience—something that has defined the series and inspired countless artists, including ourselves.”
What’s the best sunrise Super8 & Tab ever found?
“Recently, we discovered a small island called Koh Tao in Thailand. The nature there is stunning, the food is incredible, and the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. But most importantly, the sunrises and sunsets are absolutely spectacular!”
